A trip to the barn to make soap!

Soap Making-a peak into my barn

Now I have been blogging for almost a year, and I have yet to blog about making soap, for me this is hard to believe, as it is a huge passion for me. I began making soap 9 years ago and it has been a love-LOVE ever since.

My soap making began one night when the Holy Spirit woke me up, I had been praying for an 'outlet' for me. Something I could do that wasn't related to my being a mom/homeschool teacher/wife ...that I was 24/7. Something that could be for my pleasure, something that I could be passionate about.

Yup, soap. When the Holy Spirit spoke it to me in the middle of the night, I questioned what kind of lead was this? Do people make soap I said? I began a quest to answer that question and after a 6 month search, came up with they do and here's what you need.

For a while I had a business, doing craft fairs and building up a client base. Things changed with my soap making when Princess Sunshine (then 3, now 8) was added to our family through foster care. She had been abused and needed my full attention. God also pulled me out of my job outside the home (waitressing at night) to totally cover our sweet new girl.

I slowed down in my soap volume, but my passion is still there. I make each batch as the Spirit leads, each time a new adventure- a new surprise awaits at the unveiling of each new batch.

This time I made a patchouli-sweet fern and a cucumber, melon, bergamont soap. Hoping to spend some more time out in my soap barn, now that we have hit a groove with our size "6" family. Can't wait to see what 'we' will create next!

What a fun passion! Something that's your own. I think we made soap a time or two when I was young but I haven't tried since I am 'head homemaker'. Maybe in my next season of boredom.... :)

Hi Emily

I clean out the containers and use them as a mold for the soap...when I pour it in, it is like pudding, in 24-48 hours it becomes ready to cut. Then I just peel away the carton and cut it into bars. After 6 weeks it is ready to use soap.

Hi There!

I have been lurking for a while and I would like to say I really enjoy your blog!

Though I am not active in the Church your devotion and selflessness has been very inspiring to me.

What a wonderful thing you are doing with your children, wonderful... wonderful.

I love you soap making post, my mom used to make it when I was a child (to make ends meet) and I have always wanted to try.

Wonderful blog!!

Wow, how fun! Do all your kids get involved or is this just a "Kimmie project"?

Sometimes I wonder, Kimmie, if you have ANY idea what you are giving your kids... If from my vantage point far, far away, with only a very limited peek at your life I see such incredible love, time, effort, prayer, enjoyment for your kids, things like animals and the outdoors and a red barn.... what childhood fantasies are made of! And when I think of what you've rescued most of your children from...

You are incredible, and God shines CLEARLY through you- the comment before mine demonstrates that.

Love you and I wish I had some Kimmie soap. :)

...some answers...

Julie- I got books- then drove from Canada to Virginia (over 6 months) to locate palm and coconut oil. The internet NOW is loaded with basic soaping lessons.

Sarah-
Some of the kids have done melt and pour soaps with me, but really the cold process soap I do is WAY to caustic (soap is made with LYE) - so I always do it alone. (;-) that is part of the JOY!

Thanks for your comment on HSBA. I have been here before, and I am so glad I came back! I came at the right time, too... Jocelyn and I are writing for The Girlhood Home Companion, and Jocelyn is on a mission to make soap from our goats' milk. She has been researching recipes and ingredients and scents.
You have such a cozy blog.
I am really sorry for your loss of your friend. Sounds like you have had some rough times lately, emotionally. God bless and keep you through it all.
blessings!

That's so wonderful that God spoke to you that way and that you have this outlet. You're so much like my mom, who is such a powerful prayer warrior too. God bless you.
