Naming the Babe

Our littlest has a name, honestly we wrestled with this 'naming' more than any of our other children. We had a name picked out, prior to our feet landing in Ethiopia.

Then we fell in love with the country, then we met our hand picked ball of Beauty. Almost immediately we knew we had to regroup with our name, my Knight and I agreed, she needed to retain her name- to hold onto the rich heritage that God had given her. We did feel that God led us to a name, one that points to Him.

So, without any more adieu:

Let me present....

Avianna Mihret

Avi-in Hebrew it means 'My Father' (God)

Anna- means (God's) Grace

Mihret-in Amharic means Mercy

We have been calling her Baby Mercy since our referral back in October. Think I let that slip once in one of my posts. We are mainly calling her Mihret. Her first name, may come into use, as time goes on, I am sure God will give us wisdom. I know He already has in so many ways, to which we are thankful.

Funny story, while we were in Ethiopia several people we love were sitting here trying to figure out what her name would be...we told no one ahead of time. They only knew her as 'Baby Mercy.' But they did have the clue that God had given all of our girls a name with an 'ANNA' in it...(truth be told, we didn't realize it until our last adoption, but God had a pattern in place-we were surprised!)

None of the 'guessers' had come up with Avianna...

Her biggest sister (17) insists that she is an 'Avi' and really whined pleaded that we give it to her as her first name.

This adoption has been full of so many surprises, twists and turns...seems fitting that naming her would take on many of those same adoption path aspects!

I think Princess Mercy has a nice blog ring to it, eh?

Thank you Jules-
for updating my header for me. If any of you are looking for a new header, or a blog makeover...Jules is one talented lady.

Love it! Avianna is actually similar to the name we hope to call Bernice. Sounds like you all are doing well. Praise God.

How do you pronounce Mihret? From the way I am saying it in my head, she has a beautiful name. :) (Not to imply that if I am saying it wrong it's any less beautiful) ;)

I am definitely into choosing a name based on its meaning. Her name is perfect. And Princess Mercy? Absolutely lovely. :)

Thanks for sharing. I've been waiting to see what name goes with such a sweet little face.

Avianna Mihret it is. . .and so fitting for such a beautiful child. I love her pet name. . Princess Mercy . . so fitting.
I was just thinking how fun it would be to have a live feed into your home. . .now and then to have a peek. . .at the cooing and the chatting in your home.

So gorgeous, Princess Mercy. Knowing the meaning makes a lovely name even more beautiful.

Both of our adopted boys retained their birth names as first names - one of the two gifts their mother could give them. Their second names were chosen for the meaning.

She needs a place on the sidebar with all her brothers and sisters now!

I am a new reader. Perhaps I have missed this, but I can't seem to find the names of your other girls. You mentioned they were all "Anna" names and I'm trying to imagine 4 other names with Anna in the name!

Wow...I just found your blog a bit ago, and am just amazed at God's leading in this...your new little bundle is just gorgeous! My husand and I have considered adoption, though we haven't really pursued it yet. Our youngest is just turning a year next month, so maybe in a bit. What a beautiful family!

It`s perfect for her! I really like both names, I`d have a hard time knowing which to use. :)

I`m just melting over the photos. I showed them to Dorian and he said, "oh, she`s so CUTE!" :D I asked if he thought we should think about getting a baby and he said "no, no more babies here, Mama."

I love the name Avianna. We put a lot of thought into the meanings behind the names we gave our daughter too, but it was still a tough decision at the last minute. How wonderful for you to be in tune with God enough for Him to pick the name.
