We almost live in ours. Most people however just cook rice on the stove. We just have raised two little Central Americans that would love rice at every meal.
Kimmie, When my kids were home I used mine often. I love it. I also used it to steam veggies and potatoes. Now, I don't use it as often because it is just the two of us. Also I am diabetic and don't make many rice dishes ...too many carbs for me. Mine is a million years old...lol.
I grew up with rice being a staple at almost every meal, and a rice cooker doing all the cooking. I still make rice at least once a week, and love my rice cooker. My mom still has her rice cooker that's about 15 years old now, and it's still working great. I had one for around 12 years before I replaced it with one that has a special setting for brown rice and one for mixed white/brown. I've had it for about 2 years now, and it's worth every penny I paid for it. This is the one I have (though I think I only paid around $120). http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-ZCC18-10-Cup-Cooker-Premium/dp/B000A7NN4I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326434316&sr=8-2
To answer your question: do you need one? No. But, they do make cooking rice super easy, and they're worth the money if you have extra funds and want one. :)
Kimmie, So many of our meals are veggies and rice! We have and use a rice cooker. At least three times a week. With so many distractions (read: kids) I was always burning the rice so we got a rice cooker. It saved me a lot of cleaning scorched pans. Here's what happens: Put in rice, put in twice as much water, push cook. The cooker does the rest and Turns Off when it's done. Lifesaver.
We have a rice cooker - use it all the time! I'll pass on a trick I learned from my friends from Burma - put as much (or as little) rice as you want in the cooker, then add water until, when your pointer (1st) finger is set on the top of the rice, the water comes up to the first knuckle. Always the perfect amount of water - no fiddling around with measuring! Hope that made sense. They can often be found at the thrift shop for super-cheap. :) Erin
I don't own a rice cooker, BUT they are great time savers, even if you are good at cooking rice (I wasn't either until I learned the Guatemalan method of toasting rice before cooking it). So, since you could probably use a little more time and less frustration, I'd say yes! :)
Yes! I love mine. I use it for rice and so much more. Lots of kids = lots of distractions when rice is on the stove. I often do our morning oatmeal in it - no worries about the oatmeal boiling over on the stove while I am getting the kids ready in the morning. It is also good for steaming veggies.
I don't own a stand mixer, which many people consider a necessity. I don't own a food processor. But I do own a rice cooker! I love it for making rice and oatmeal perfectly without having to monitor it at all-- no burning or boiling over for those of us trying to do 6 other things at the same time!
I'm so glad you asked this question. I've been wondering about rice cookers lately. My husband recently had to go gluten free and we now eat A LOT of rice. I think I'll look into them a little more now. Thanks Kimmie! :)
Get a dual cooker like mine... it's a pressure cooker OR a rice cooker. I use the pressure cooker all the time, especially when I forget to thaw the roast and can have it on the table within one hour and still have it fall apart well done. I don't have room for just a rice cooker!

I've loved them in the past, but they die so quickly. If I got another one I'd go for real quality.

I've never used one...I always cook rice on the stove or in the microwave. Several of my friends cook it in the oven but I've never tried that.

I love having one. It's one less thing I have to keep track of and the rice comes out good everytime (if we put the right amount of water in it! :-))
Miss you! Sue
